Becks named in title bid squad

David Beckham has been named in the Real Madrid squad for tomorrow’s match against Real Mallorca, which will be the midfielder’s final game for the Spanish giants before his move to America.

Beckham had been unable to take a full part in training this week due to the left ankle injury he picked up while on England duty and then appeared to aggravate during last Saturday’s draw at Real Zaragoza.

However, the former England captain has steadily increased his fitness work throughout the week and, after training alongside his team-mates this morning, was included in a 19-man squad for the title-deciding clash with Mallorca.

Three points against the mid-table Balearic Islanders at the Bernabeu would earn Madrid their first league title since 2003, and also give Beckham his first major trophy since joining from Manchester United four years ago.

The 32-year-old is leaving Spain this summer to take up a contract with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy.

Madrid coach Fabio Capello also received a further boost after being granted permission to play the club’s international players from Brazil, Argentina and Mali.

It had looked as though Brazilian duo Robinho and Marcelo, Argentinian pair Fernando Gago and Gonzalo Higuain, plus Mali midfielder Mahamadou Diarra, might be absent for the match due to international commitments.

But Madrid have been given clearance by the players’ respective federations to face Mallorca.

However, Miguel Torres, Alvaro Mejia, Antonio Cassano and Raul Bravo are all out injured.
