An Indonesian politician who passed anti-pornography laws has resigned after being caught looking at lewd images in parliament.

The 50-year-old lawmaker, named Arifinto, is a member of the staunchly Islamic Prosperous Justice Party and was filmed gazing at downloaded porn on his computer during a debate.

He apologised to his constituents and immediately stepped down from parliament after pictures of him looking at the images appeared on the front of newspapers throughout the country.

The red-faced father-of-five said: "It's my decision. Nobody tried to coerce me."

Last year, the editor-in-chief of Playboy Indonesia was sentenced to two years behind bars.
