Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr believes next week’s friendly against Portugal will serve as “ideal preparation” for the vital World Cup qualifier with Israel at the end of March.
Kerr has named a strong 27-man squad for the Lansdowne Road clash with the Portuguese on Wednesday, February 9, opting for a blend of youth and experience.
Manchester United skipper Roy Keane returns after being "rested" for the friendly win over Croatia in November, as do Stephen Carr, Andy O’Brien, Matt Holland, Andy Reid and Jonathan Macken who all missed that game through injury.
Birmingham striker Clinton Morrison is also included after a knee ligament injury saw him limp off early during the goalless draw in France in October, subsequently ruling him out of the following Group Four win over the Faroe Islands, along with Croatia.
After just one defeat in 13 matches throughout 2004, Kerr could not have chosen a more difficult game with which to kick off the 2005 international calendar.
But it is the game with Israel in Tel Aviv on March 26 that is of primary concern for Kerr, with the Republic looking to build on their unbeaten start to the group stages as they hopefully head to Germany in 2006 for the World Cup finals.
“Portugal are one of the best teams in the world at the moment and next week’s game is ideal preparation for what is a vital encounter against Israel,” said Kerr.
“Portugal were unlucky not to win last year’s European Championships after reaching the finals on home soil, and they have since continued to show just how strong they are.
“They defeated Russia 7-1 in a World Cup qualifying game, and that’s no mean achievement, so it will be tough encounter for us.”
Kerr added: “This match is the perfect preparation for our next Group Four World Cup tie against Israel.
“The likes of Stephen Elliott and Aiden McGeady have made excellent progress with Sunderland and Celtic in the last few months.
“It’s good to have players like them around to fit into the squad system if there are any injuries or suspensions.”
