US electronics giant Motorola is to axe up to 4,000 jobs - about 3% of its work force - from its semiconductor operations by the end of the year.

Motorola, the world’s number three maker of semiconductors and number two in mobile phones, has been suffering from a slowdown in the semiconductor market and falling profitability in its phone operations.

Last month it eliminated 2,500 jobs at its phone plant in Illinois, and in December disclosed 2,870 layoffs in Iowa, Florida and Ireland.

No specific locations for the job cuts were announced today. The company’s semiconductor operations are based in Austin, Texas.
