The Taoiseach has welcomed the restoration of the Northern Assembly.

The 108 Members of the Legislative Assembly re-convened this morning for the first time since it collapsed in October 2002.

David Ervive of the PUP, which has links with the UVF, has aligned himself with the Ulster Unionist Party.

Mr Ahern says that arrangement is a matter for the Ulster Unionists and David Ervine

“Like all politicians they want to maximize their influence. I don't read any more into that. It's good that their back, October 2002 is a long time ago,” he said today.

“They're back now, they have power, the power to form an Executive in Northern Ireland, and I hope, in the period ahead we will work to achieve that.”
