Ex-Atletico Madrid chief Jesus Gil dies

Former Atletico Madrid president Jesus Gil died this evening.

Former Atletico Madrid president Jesus Gil died this evening.

The larger-than-life character passed away at the age of 71, five days after being admitted to hospital following a massive stroke.

Gil’s condition had been constantly deteriorating and he was served his last rites on Thursday.

Gil had been on a life support machine.

Earlier today, current Atletico coach Gregorio Manzano paid his own tribute to Gil, who had lived a chequered life but whose passion for the Spanish club was unquestionable.

Despite losing the presidency two years ago, when he was forbidden from holding public office and occupying a place on the board of a sporting limited company, Gil remained the major shareholder at Atletico and an influential figure.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s match against Real Zaragoza, Manzano said: “We have to win to be able to dedicate victory to him because he deserves it for everything he has done for the club.

“It must serve as a stimulus for us because Jesus always wanted the best for his club, and wanted us back in Europe.”
