The Magdalene Sisters, the film which depicted life in the laundries run by the Magdalene nuns, has earned four nominations in this year’s London Film Critics’ Circle Awards.
Director Peter Mullan has been nominated for his directing and screen-writing skills, while actresses Eileen Walsh and Nora-Jane Noone are also up for gongs.
Russell Crowe epic Master And Commander and low-budget British film Young Adam lead the nominations, with six and seven nods respectively.
Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World has been nominated for six awards including film of the year, best director, best actor for Crowe and best British actor for Paul Bettany.
The swashbuckling Napoleonic drama set on the high seas is adapted from the novels of Patrick O’Brian.
Young Adam leads the British field with nominations in seven categories.
Ewan McGregor is in the running for best British actor and David Mackenzie is up for three awards: best British director, best British screenwriter and best British newcomer.
The Scottish thriller raised eyebrows with its graphic sex scenes between McGregor and co-star Emily Mortimer.
Film of the year will be a battle between Master and Commander, The Hours, Far From Heaven, Mystic River and The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at London’s Dorchester Hotel on February 11, held in aid of the NSPCC.
