Postal services in the eastern region and in Co Galway remain in disarray today following the suspension of more than 270 staff at An Post’s Dublin mail centre.

The workers were suspended over the weekend for refusing to operate new sorting equipment that they said was introduced without prior consultation.

The national executive of the Communications Workers Union is due to meet later today to discuss the matter.

The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association has appealed to both sides to exercise common sense and to do their utmost to avoid a national postal strike, which, it said, would damage the economy.
