Perfect performance from Murtagh

Johnny Murtagh rode his rivals to sleep and added a second Group One to Simply Perfect’s record in the feature race on day one of the Ritz Club July Festival at Newmarket.

Johnny Murtagh rode his rivals to sleep and added a second Group One to Simply Perfect’s record in the feature race on day one of the Ritz Club July Festival at Newmarket.

Last year’s Fillies’ Mile winner made all under a tactical front-running ride from the Irishman to see off Irridescence by a length in the UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes.

Jeremy Noseda’s grey finished third on her first outing this season in the 1000 Guineas, before finding the extra distance at Epsom beyond her when taking sixth in the Vodafone Oaks.

But returned to her favoured trip of a mile, the 6-1 shot was pushed into the lead by Murtagh, who slowed the pace down before kicking at the two-furlong pole and going for home.

Simply Perfect was not for passing in the closing stages and landed a slight touch having opened at 8-1 on course.

South African raider Irridescence boxed on well to finish second on her first outing in Britain with John Oxx’s Arch Swing coming down the centre of the course to take third by a neck.

Noseda said: “She is a very tough filly and a very good, honest performer.

“She has been going since before Royal Ascot last year and she has now won a Group One at two and three at a mile.

“Great credit to Johnny. He said he wanted to make it, she would settle well and it would suit her in front.

“He had the plan and I said ’if you believe it, we will leave it with you’. He deserves a huge amount of credit and it was a brilliant ride.

“This was her day – they had a chance to come and pass her but they couldn’t. I have entered her in France but will enjoy today before planning for the future.”

And as to her preferred distance, he added: “I have always said a mile and a quarter would be her ideal trip, but maybe I am wrong as on paper that is her best performance to date.

“I hoped her class would get her home at Epsom and she didn’t get the run of the race. She didn’t stay but even if she had, she would have probably finished about fifth.”

Murtagh said: “She kept getting knocked down in the Oaks and she didn’t stay but still finished sixth. She is mentally and physically stronger than earlier in the season and she has thickened up.

“I didn’t think there was going to be much pace in the race so I thought she might get an easy lead. Jeremy thought she might be a bit keen but I told him she would settle. She was looking round a bit but she was all go and when I got to the three-pole, I thought ’she isn’t going to get beat today’.”

Mike de Kock, trainer of Irridescence, said: “I would have liked to have led earlier but that didn’t happen and I can’t complain because it was a massive run.

“The Beverly D Stakes has always been the aim but there is always Glorious Goodwood.”

Oxx felt the lack of early tempo had been against Arch Swing, who had finished a place in front of Simply Perfect in the Guineas.

“There was not enough pace and the winner slowed it down. She has not been a lucky filly, although she never lets us down,” he said.

“The Matron Stakes at Leopardstown will probably be her next start.”

Royal Ascot winner Nannina was sent off the 5-2 favourite but she failed to figure in fourth while Red Evie was again disappointing and trailed home stone last.

Connections of the market leader had no obvious excuse for her performance with Chris Richardson, managing director of owners Cheveley Park Stud, saying: “We are a bit disappointed really. She has run here three times and has disappointed each time. We’ll go to the Nassau now but Jimmy (Fortune) said she never really got going.”
