Four politicians confirm continued support for Norris

Four politicians have said they will continue to support Senator David Norris in his bid to become the president of Ireland.

Independent TDs Maureen O'Sullivan and Stephen Donnelly have joined Senators Sean Barrett and John Crowne in confirming their support for Senator Norris.

It comes despite revelations about a letter Senator Norris wrote to an Israeli court in 1997, seeking clemency for his former partner, who had been convicted of having sex with a 15-year-old boy.

The Senator wrote the letter on Seanad paper and described Ezra Yizhak Nawi as "a trustworthy, good and moral person".

Deputy Donnelly has said he believes "it is the right of the Irish people and not members of the Oireachtas", to decide who Ireland's next President should be.

Senator Crowne said he will continue to support him in the interests of democracy, but also said writing the letter was "wrong".

Senator David Norris says he will continue in his campaign for the presidency.

Senator Norris released the letter himself and has said he is still committed to remaining in the presidential race, but admitted that his campaign was in serious trouble and that his chances are now "slim".
