SIPTU and Irish Ferries are meeting today to seek a resolution to the case of a Filipina beautician who was employed by the company for just €1 an hour.

The woman was hired via a recruitment agency on a contract that gave her around €350-a-month for working 12-hour days, with just three days off in the month.

Irish Ferries cancelled her contract when the issue was highlighted in the media.

The company is also due to meet SIPTU representatives in the coming days to discuss the company's plan to 'outsource' labour on its MV Normandy service from Rosslare to Cherbourg.

SIPTU is vehemently opposed to the plan, which is designed to reduce Irish Ferries' cost by replacing Irish workers with cheaper labour from abroad.
