The cold snap continued to bite in the UK this afternoon as a raft of sporting fixtures fell prey to the sub-zero conditions sweeping the country.

Today’s Coca-Cola Championship matches at Cardiff, Blackpool and Scunthorpe headlined the list of postponements, while just one of nine fixtures in Coca-Cola League Two got the go-ahead.

In League One, only one game has been called off, while several matches are off in Scotland and 10 in the Blue Square Premier.

Cardiff’s match against Leicester and Blackpool’s encounter with West Brom were subject to pitch inspections this morning and neither were able the pass the officials’ tests. Scunthorpe’s home game against Ipswich had been postponed earlier.

Wycombe turned to their supporters in a bid to save their League One fixture at home to Oldham.

Wanderers hoped to salvage their match today with the help of their fans at Adams Park, asking them to turn up with shovels, and later confirmed the game would indeed go ahead.

With Wycombe’s game given the all-clear, only Colchester v Carlisle was a victim of the cold in the third tier.

In League Two, Aldershot v Bradford, Cheltenham v Burton, Accrington v Barnet, Darlington v Northampton, Bury and Macclesfield, Rotherham v Dagenham and Redbridge, Port Vale v Chesterfield and Crewe v Torquay were all off, leaving Rochdale v Shrewsbury as the only game in the division to survive.

Last night’s League Two clash between Hereford and Lincoln was also postponed while all bar one of this weekend’s Blue Square Premier matches were off, Gateshead v Kettering the only surviving fixture.

In Scotland, Ayr v Partick and Queen of the South v Raith Rovers were off in Division One, as well as Cowdenbeath v Arbroath, Peterhead v Clyde, Dumbarton v Alloa and Stirling v Stenhousemuir in Division Two, and Annan v Livingston and Forfar v Berwick in Division Three.

In rugby union, the Pool Four Heineken Cup clash between Stade Francais and Ulster was postponed due to adverse weather in Brussels.

Northampton’s Heineken Cup clash at Treviso was put back an hour to 2.30pm GMT due to adverse weather in Italy, while Newport Gwent Dragons’ game with Biarritz, postponed last night because of a partially frozen pitch, got under way this afternoon.

The weather has also caused several race meetings to be called off or to face further course inspections.

Officials at Ascot have abandoned today’s high-profile meeting.

As a result, for the second day in a row there will be no racing at the Berkshire course because of snow.

Races at Newcastle have been cancelled because of snow.

This afternoon’s National Hunt meeting at Haydock was abandoned.

Today’s action on the hurdles track at Navan has received the all-clear following a morning inspection.

Although the chase course, due to stage the final two events on the card, is still under assessment, the hurdles circuit was found to be fit for racing.

Carlisle officials will check conditions this afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s National Hunt fixture.
