Met Éireann has issued a weather warning for tonight as heavy rain is expected to lead to localised flooding in some areas.

Up to 70 millimetres will fall in parts of Munster and South Leinster over the next 12 hours.

Forecaster with Met Éireann Sean Sherlock said: "Some parts of the country could expect 60 to 70 millimetres and that's due to the thundery nature of the rain - there could be some very heavy, even torrential downpours.

"Showers at first will merge into longer spells of rain...Over the night it will gradually spread northwards through the country, but as it spreads it will lose some of its intensity."
