At least two people have been injured during a strong earthquake in southwestern Japan.

At least two people have been injured during a strong earthquake in southwestern Japan.

The earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 struck near Hiroshima, about 429 miles southwest of Tokyo.

At least two people have been taken to hospital, national broadcaster NHK reported.

Local officials were not immediately available for comment.

Buildings in Hiroshima city swayed violently and people had trouble standing,

Television footage taken from inside NHK's Hiroshima office showed hanging lights shaking and employees leaving their desks to head for the exits. Telephone service in the area was also interrupted.

The quake burst water pipes and caused traffic jams on some highways. Bullet train and subway services were also delayed.
