Hammers nail down Repka to new deal

Tomas Repka has rejected the opportunity to play Champions League football to agree a new two-year deal with West Ham.

Tomas Repka has rejected the opportunity to play Champions League football to agree a new two-year deal with West Ham.

The Czech defender spurned advances from a number of European clubs, including Panathinaikos and Bayer Leverkusen, to stay at Upton Park.

West Ham expect the deal to be finalised in the next day or two, but Repka has headed off for a family holiday content his immediate future lies in East London.

His agent, Ondrej Chovanec said: “Tomas signed a new two-year with West Ham on Friday. He had a lot of offers, from Panathinaikos, from Duisburg in Germany, from Leverkusen, Trabzonspor, Shakhtar Donetsk.

“But he spent four years at West Ham and was successful last year. He loves the club and he loves the fans, he is very happy to stay in the Premiership.

“If he wanted more money, he would have signed for Shakhtar, but in his eyes the quality of the Premiership is the best in the world.”

Repka, aged 31, had been due to leave the club before their play-off final victory over Preston secured a return to the top flight.

Chovanec said Repka’s deal is “more of less” than same as his previous contract and that money had not been the driving factor in the negotiations.

Chovanec explained that Repka extended his stay at West Ham for a number of reasons – his love of the club, the supporters, his relationship with manager Alan Pardew and because he is convinced the Hammers will stay in the top flight.

“Alan Pardew wanted to sign him because he trusts Tomas. Tomas likes Alan because last season was very good. This was the reason he signed,” said Chovanec.

“He wanted West Ham to sign other players. They signed Roy Carroll from Manchester United, they signed Christian Dailly and Teddy Sheringham (to new deals). They have the team to stay in the Premiership.

“He hopes West Ham will play good football with good results.”

A West Ham spokesman said that while the deal is yet to be finalised, the club don’t anticipate any problems and are “hopeful everything will be signed and sealed within the next day or so“.
