Kavanagh handed defensive role by Cork

Team captain Derek Kavanagh will assume a defensive role for Cork's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final against Donegal on Saturday (Croke Park, throw-in 4pm).

Team captain Derek Kavanagh will assume a defensive role for Cork's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final against Donegal on Saturday (Croke Park, throw-in 4pm).

The Nemo Rangers clubman, who normally lines out in midfield, will start at full-back this weekend to cover for the injured Graham Canty (cruciate knee).

Canty is out for the rest of the season after damaging his knee against Kerry in the Munster final replay.

Cork boss Billy Morgan has made one change in personnel to the side that beat Kerry 1-12 to 0-9 at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Nemo's David Niblock comes into the side at centre forward, with Pearse O'Neill from Aghada moving to midfield to fill in for Kavanagh.

O'Neill only made his senior debut for Cork in the drawn game against Kerry last month but has made a suitable impression on Morgan and his selectors so far.

Saturday's game is the first ever championship tie between Cork and the Tir Chonaill men. Notably, the Rebels have won both of their two previous All-Ireland quarter-finals, beating Mayo (2002) and Galway (2005).

James Masters will hope his memorable summer can continue at headquarters - the Nemo star had scored 1-21 in his last three games, leaving him four points behind Wexford's Matty Forde (1-25) as the 2006 championship's top scorer.
