Agony for Sunderland as Campbell grabs late goal

Roy Keane's Sunderland almost made a giant step towards promotion tonight, were it not for a last-minute strike from DJ Campbell.

Roy Keane's Sunderland almost made a giant step towards promotion tonight, were it not for a last-minute strike from DJ Campbell.

The goal salvaged a 1-1 draw with fellow promotion hopefuls Birmingham at St Andrews.

The visitors were great value for their first-half lead - Carlos Edwards drilling a scorcher into the top left corner from 30 yards.

But the Blues came back strongly after half-time and Campbell rescued a point from close range in the 90th minute.

With leaders Derby not in action, West Brom narrowed the gap at the top and leapfrogged their West Midlands rivals with a 1-0 win at home against Cardiff thanks to Nathan Ellington's 20-yard shot after 65 minutes.

Ian Dowie's managerial reign at Coventry got off to a bright start with a 2-1 win over Southampton.

Dele Adebola opened the scoring in the opening minutes, but Dowie's joy was short-lived as the visitors equalised after 13 minutes through Marek Saganowski.

However, Kevin Kyle restored City's advantage after 29 minutes heading home Michael Doyle's cross.

Preston beat Norwich 2-1 having given themselves an early lead at Deepdale after 27 minutes when Pavel Pergi hit a right-foot shot into the bottom of the net from 25 yards.

They made it 2-0 16 minutes later through Danny Dichio's right-foot shot and held on despite Jason Shackell's close-range effort for the visitors.

Leeds battled hard against fellow strugglers QPR at Elland Road, but the nearest they came to a goal was Robbie Blake's free-kick against the bar from 20 yards and it ended 0-0.

Barnsley eased home 3-0 at Oakwell against fellow strugglers Hull. Istvan Ferenczi scored one in each half with Peter Rajcz netting in between.

Leicester were grateful for John McGreal's own-goal which gave them the win at Turf Moor against Burnley.

Wolves took the points at Ipswich thanks to a brilliant left-foot curler from Stephen Ward in the 33rd minute.

Sheffield Wednesday old boy Drew Talbot came back to haunt his former club when he snatched the points with a close range shot on 62 minutes for Luton as the Hatters won 3-2.

The Hatters went behind in the first half when Deon Burton put the visitors ahead following a sweeping move after 24 minutes.

But the home side evened things up through Bjorn Runstrom's effort from the left of the area eight minutes later and took the lead on 53 minutes with Tommy Spurr's own-goal. Glenn Whelan made it 2-2 on the hour with a thunderbolt from 30 yards for the Owls.

Plymouth romped to a 3-0 victory over Colchester. They opened the scoring after 12 minutes through David Norris' right-foot shot from 18 yards. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake made it 2-0 with a penalty after 57 minutes and Dan Gosling wrapped it up nine minutes later.

Crystal Palace went home with the points after a 1-0 win at Southend thanks to Paul Ifill's second-half effort.
