Moyes sticks with United-drawing side

Everton began life without Wayne Rooney at Manchester City this afternoon hoping to cement their position in the top half of the Premiership.

Rooney’s £27m (€39.6m) departure to Manchester United came too late for David Moyes to spend any of the fee on strengthening his squad, so the Toffees boss stuck with the side which earned a creditable draw at Old Trafford on their last league outing two weeks ago.

Thomas Gravesen was available again but Tim Cahill kept his place for the visitors, who have picked up seven points from nine since their opening day disaster against Arsenal.

Kevin Keegan’s line-up was also unchanged from the one that hammered Charlton as the Blues look to record back-to-back Premiership victories for the first time in almost 18 months.

Man City: James, Mills, Dunne, Distin, Thatcher, Wright-Phillips, Reyna, Barton, Sinclair, Anelka, Fowler. Subs: Sibierski, Macken, Jihai, Waterreus, Bosvelt.

Everton: Martyn, Hibbert, Weir, Stubbs, Pistone, Osman, Watson, Carsley, Cahill, Kilbane, Bent. Subs: Wright, Ferguson, McFadden, Naysmith, Gravesen.

Referee: S Bennett (Kent)
