Scene + Heard: Girl Band return and Bombshell hits the cinema

GIG WISE

Girl Band last played in Cork in 2015, but the Dublin four-piece make a welcome return to the city for a gig at Cyprus Avenue on Saturday, March 7.

Also in Cork, American soul veteran Lee Fields is at St Luke’s tonight, while ‘Both Sides Now’ singer Judy Collins is at the Opera House on Wednesday, Jan 29.

Ballydehob, Co Cork, becomes bluegrass central next weekend when the village next weekend hosts its annual festival of the enduring American genre.

FILM TIPS

Among the decent options hitting cinemas today are Bombshell, the true tale of the women went up against toxic Fox News head Roger Ailes; and Just Mercy, where Michael B Jordan stars as real-live civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson.

Cork Cine Club kicks off its new season next Thursday at St John’s Central College with a showing of French comedy Le Brio, starring Daniel Auteuil.

Triskel in Cork also has a French offering with Amanda, the tale of the aftermath of a terror attack.

Continuing the Gallic theme, Spike Lee has been named as president of the jury for the Cannes Film Festival in May, the first black man to fill the role.

ON THE TELLY

Inside Llewyn Davis

If you ever get arrested in Socorro county, when dealing with the officer concerned, please don’t make him angry.

The Guardian reports that Lou Ferrigno, famous as the Incredible Hulk in the classic TV series, has become a sheriff’s deputy in the New Mexico county.

Surely the sherrif is looking into also signing up Erik Estrada (Ponch in Chips) and selling the rights to what would be a glorious reality show.

Meanwhile, a decent line-up of guests on the Graham Norton Show tonight includes Jamie

Foxx, Michael B Jordan, and Patrick Stewart.

Next week, decent film offerings include the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis (Monday, TG4), while Hugh Laurie stars in Avenue 5 (Weds, Sky One), from the pen of Armando Iannucci (Veep, The Thick of It, etc).

COMEDY CAPERS

Joanne McNally

Brendan Schaub has announced dates for Cork Opera House (April 15) and Vicar Street, Dublin (April 16), and potential hecklers should be aware that the American standup’s previous career was as a UFC fighter.

In the meantime, Joanne McNally is at Cyprus Avenue tomorrow, while Foil, Arms & Hog continue a run at Vicar Street that threatens to rival Christy Moore’s record number of nights at the Dublin venue.

The trio of funnymen are also at the INEC in Killarney on Feb 6, with David O’Doherty playing the same venue on Feb 14.

THEATRE NIGHTS

John McCarthy is one of the rising stars of the Irish theatre world, and is one of the stars of Blackwater Babble, at the Everyman in Cork from Monday to Thursday.

The two-hander tells of a man who spent many years travelling through the Blackwater Valley, stopping into pubs along the way to witness the singsongs.

In Dublin, the Gaiety has a production of Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore from Jan 27, complete with Alex Murphy of The Young Offenders among the cast.

Anyone heading to London might be interested to hear that Michael Keegan-Dolan’s latest offering, MÁM, gets a run at Sadlers Wells from Feb 5-7.

LITERARY PURSUITS

Upcoming readings at Waterstones in Cork include fantasy author Gareth Hanrahan (Feb 1) and poet Gerry Murphy (Feb 6), both with new books out.

The Ennis Book Club Festival (March 6-8) has announced a lineup that includes the Aisling authors Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen, as well as British poet Lemn Sissay.
