Senator Dan Boyle has insisted he was not given a Twitter gagging order by the Green Party.
However, the Green Party chairman says he will censor himself when using his now famous Twitter account by taking a “commonsense” approach.
It has been reported that Green Party top brass in Government ordered Senator Boyle to stop ruffling feathers with his Twitter comments.
This follows his Tweet-of no-confidence in Willie O’Dea that contributed to his resignation as Minister for Defence.
When contacted by the Evening Echo newspaper yesterday, Mr Boyle said he would continue to use the online forum to get his message across. But he said he will stay within his own boundaries.
Within minutes of our phone-call, the online Senator Tweeted: “Rumours of my Twitter death have been greatly exaggerated.”
Mr Boyle has 2,770 Twitter followers and holds online group clinics.
“I would like to think I am my own censure on these things. I have a commonsense approach to it and I know where the boundaries are. Most of the comments about my Tweets come from people who don’t even use Twitter.”
Twitter allows messages with a 140 character limit— similar to mobile phone text messages— which can be read across the world.
Senator Boyle famously Tweeted that he had no confidence in former Minister Willie O’Dea, just hours after the Green Party recorded a vote backing him in the Dáil over the untrue allegations Mr O’Dea made about a local election candidate in Limerick.
Mr O’Dea resigned over the matter.
