The midfielder has made just one substitute appearance since the opening day of the season, and his ankle is now considered strong enough for him to start.

Fit-again Striker Shaun Bartlett also comes back into the first XI for Jason Euell, while Dennis Rommedahl replaces the injured Radostin Kishishev.

Francis Jeffers is on the bench after recovering from a cricked neck, along with Talal El Karkouri.

With Patrick Kluivert ruled out because of a hamstring injury, Craig Bellamy is pushed back up front alongside Alan Shearer in the Newcastle attack.

Darren Ambrose is preferred to Laurent Robert on the left of midfield, the Frenchman having to be content with a place on the bench.
