Golf: Record-breaker Goosen steams ahead

South Africa’s Retief Goosen smashed a 28-year-old European Tour record in Perth today, opening up an incredible 13-stroke lead with a round to play in the Johnnie Walker Classic.

South Africa’s Retief Goosen smashed a 28-year-old European Tour record in Perth today, opening up an incredible 13-stroke lead with a round to play in the Johnnie Walker Classic.

The US Open champion, Europe’s top money-winner last season, shot a Lake Karrinyup course-record 63 to reach the 54-hole mark on the 15-under-par total of 203.

With his World Cup-winning partner Ernie Els and world number four Sergio Garcia next best on two under, Goosen broke the tour record lead set by Tony Jacklin in Sweden in 1974 and equalled by Tiger Woods in the US Open at Pebble Beach two years ago.

‘‘I’ve shot 62 a couple of times at Loch Lomond (and at Montecastillo in the 1999 Volvo Masters), but with the way the course is set up this is probably the best round I’ve ever played,’’ said the 32-year-old.

‘‘I give it 10 out of 10. I didn’t think the winning score this week would be more than 10 under.

‘‘It’s a rather weird feeling to lead by this many and I’m going to have to focus but I would hope I can win from here.’’

Goosen saved his shot of the day for the 459-yard last, the toughest hole on the course.

He hit a 225-yard two-iron off a sidehill and uphill lie to 15 feet and made the putt for his ninth birdie.

Garcia beat Goosen in last year’s Lancome Trophy in Paris after trailing by four with only four holes to play, but the 22-year-old Spaniard does not expect to see another remarkable turnaround.

‘‘Retief is playing unbelievable,’’ said Garcia after a level-par 72. ‘‘Just to get into a play-off I would have to shoot nine under and he would have to shoot four over. I can’t see it happening.

‘‘I will just try to finish second.’’

Els, round in 71, said of Goosen, whom he has known since his junior days: ‘‘He has always had the talent and he showed it last year.

‘‘I’m very frustrated by my game, but I’m not far off.’’

Joint fourth on one under, 14 adrift, are English pair Anthony Wall and Simon Dyson, while Justin Rose, who pushed Goosen into second place in South Africa last year, found his 68 still left him 16 behind in joint eighth place.
