That victory helped Wasps on their way to the Heineken Cup title, but for Ruddock and his charges the target is to beat the Pumas on their home soil and follow that up with a first victory over South Africa in their backyard on June 26.

And having made six changes, including two positional, Ruddock said, “Lawrence Dallaglio pointed that out to Wasps and they went down to Bridgend within a week and won.

“That is the analogy I have used to the Wales players – that you don’t often get the chance to get immediate revenge on a team that has just beaten you.”

Argentina scored six tries as they beat Wales 50-44 at Tucuman, but Ruddock appears to have made only one change in his line-up purely on the basis of form.

That means Newport-Gwent Dragons bound Ceri Sweeney losing his number 10 jersey to Cardiff Blues’ rival Nicky Robinson, who makes his first start there for his country.

With Rhys Williams laid low by a stomach bug which has hit several squad members, Gavin Henson switches from centre to full-back and his number 12 jersey is taken by Tom Shanklin.

The stomach bug also accounts for Huw Bennett claiming a start at number two from the unfortunate Mefin Davies.

In the back-row, Ruddock has rung the changes with Dafydd Jones returning to the number six jersey, and skipper Colin Charvis taking over at openside as Jason Forster makes way.

Forster has also failed to find a place on the bench despite making a try-scoring Wales debut as a 33-year-old last weekend and now finds himself among a nine-strong advance guard of players heading for South Africa.

The first Test defeat has left the Wales players angry at themselves – so much so that skipper Colin Charvis went to Ruddock the day after the defeat to tell the coach the squad wanted to revert to a more physical approach in this week’s preparations to last.

Ruddock said, “Colin came to see me after a video debrief on Sunday morning and said the players felt they had let the management down.

“He told me they wanted to get the gum-shields Monday and Tuesday and bash lumps out of each other basically to exorcise a few demons.

“We granted them their wish on Tuesday afternoon and that is why we gave them Wednesday morning off – so that they could recover a bit.

“They got into each other and probably feel better for it. That is an attitude and focus thing that is what we want on Saturday.

“But it will be no good if we leave that on the training field and don’t deliver it in a Test match.

“That is the message I will be giving them for the rest of this week.”

Ruddock hopes to meet Irish referee Donal Courtney tomorrow to discuss issues involving his interpretation of the tackle area amid the Wales belief that the Pumas went unpunished for persistently slowing down the visitors’ attacks in the opening Test.

He added: “All the pre-first Test statistics show that the slower the game, the more chance Argentina have of winning and the faster it is, the more chance we have of winning it.

“All the ball-in-play figures from the 2003 World Cup showed us that and we don’t think those sorts of things change in a week.”
