An attempt to demolish a 15-storey building in the grounds of one of Dublin's biggest hospitals has ended in failure.

An attempt to demolish a 15-storey building in the grounds of one of Dublin's biggest hospitals has ended in failure.

The former nurses' home was to have come down with the aid of strategically-placed explosives.

But though the charges went off as planned, the building remained in place - with only a slight tilt to indicate anything had happened.

A spokesman for the company involved said the building had proved stronger than expected.

A crane with a ball and chain will now be used to complete the job and the site should be clear by Tuesday.

A spokesman at St Vincent's Hospital said there was no danger from the leaning building to patients or anyone else using the hospital.
