Scorer McCarthy turns villain for Waterford

Ger McCarthy earned Waterford an FAI Cup replay tonight but knows he should have prevented a trip to Flancare Park on Monday night after missing a stoppage-time chance.

Robbie Martin missed a sitter before older brother John showed him where the goal was, giving Longford a 14th minute lead.

Midfielder Martin did it all himself, cutting in from the right on a solo run before lifting the ball over Ben Spicer from a very tight angle.

The lead lasted just seven minutes as Ger McCarthy was hauled to the ground by Steven Gough.

Gough got a booking and McCarthy sent Mick Dempsey the wrong way from the penalty spot.

But McCarthy should have put the gloss on Blues' second half dominance right at the finish, but blasted Niall Irwin's lay-off just over the bar.
