The Weakest Link has become the first programme to beat Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? in audience ratings.

Anne Robinson's BBC quiz drew a higher audience for 10 minutes from 9pm when the two shows went head-to-head on Monday .

The final round of The Weakest Link drew 10 million viewers, a 39% share of the audience.

Chris Tarrant's Millionaire on ITV was watched by 7.5 million for the first 10 minutes.

BBC1 controller Lorraine Heggessey said: "This confirms The Weakest Link is phenomenally popular with viewers."

An ITV spokesman said overall figures for the entire episodes showed Millionaire won nine million viewers compared with 8.2 million for The Weakest Link.

"It is pretty lame to look at 10 minutes in an hour-long programme, which Millionaire was," he said.
