European military observers held by pro-Russians in Ukraine 'not mistreated'

A group of eight European military observers detained by pro-Russia insurgents in Ukraine has appeared in public and given assurances that they are not being mistreated.

Axel Schneider from Germany, who spoke for the group, denied they were spying for Nato, as the pro-Russia insurgents claim.

The observers were travelling under the auspices of the Organisation of Security and Cooperation in Europe when they were detained on Friday in eastern Ukraine.

The self-proclaimed mayor of the city Vacheslav Ponomarev has accused them of being Nato spies.

Three captured Ukrainian security service officers are also among more than a dozen hostages being held in Slovyansk.
