Two hundred and seventy workers at the Youghal Carpet Yarns factory in east Cork are expected to be laid off this morning following a meeting between unions and management at the firm.

The company’s management has asked unions to attend an urgent meeting this morning and staff fear they will be informed of the plant’s impending closure.

Mattie O’Callaghan, a MANDATE spokesman, said: "Unfortunately, it looks like the news is going to be bad."
