The Health and Safety Authority has revealed that 61 people died in workplace accidents in Ireland last year.

However, in its annual report for 2002, the HSA also said the rate of serious injuries in Irish workplaces fell by 14% in the preceding four years.

Despite this reduction, the authority said the number of women injured at work increased by 50% between 1998 and 2002.

The HSA has pledged to continue its efforts to reduce the number of workplace accidents and injuries.

Chief executive Tom Beegan said: "The message must go out that all companies have a duty to protect their staff by providing proper risk assessments, equipment and training."
