Soccer: Record-breaking Cottee not finished yet

Tony Cottee has set his sights on achieving another personal record after becoming the first player to appear in all four divisions in the same season.

Tony Cottee has set his sights on achieving another personal record after becoming the first player to appear in all four divisions in the same season.

Cottee came on as a substitute for Millwall against Wycombe on Tuesday night after starting the season with Leicester before moving to Norwich and then taking up the post of player-manager at Barnet.

But the 35-year-old striker is now hoping to land another milestone by winning his first promotion to the First Division with the Lions.

Cottee said: "I would like to help Millwall get promotion as I've never been part of any promotion side before - and if we get into the First Division I would like to carry on playing there."

The former West Ham star also admitted he wished he had found the target in his two substitute appearances for Leicester as that would have put him within touching distance of yet another record - scoring, as well as playing, in all four leagues in the same season.

He said: "Unfortunately I didn't score for Leicester in the Premiership at the start of the season otherwise I could have been looking at another record. But if I can score for Millwall it would be great."

Cottee has experienced most things the game has to offer domestically but conceded that even he was surprised by the many twists and turns his season had taken.

He joined the Canaries in Division One on a free transfer but the chance to move into management with Barnet proved too appealing.

Initially it seemed a wise choice as he led his new team to a 7-0 Third Division success against Blackpool soon after arriving at Underhill.

But since the turn of the year Barnet's fortunes have taken a turn for the worse and as they plunged closer to the relegation zone Cottee decided to part company with the Bees before accepting the chance to join Millwall.

"All I can say is when I started the season in the Premiership I didn't expect to end it playing in the Second Division," he said.

"I never expected to go to Norwich or Barnet or Millwall so it's funny how it's worked out.

"If it's some sort of record then I'm pleased to have done it. I'm still trying to work out whether it's a good achievement - I don't know to be honest."

But Cottee was certain his experiences would stand him in good stead for the future, particularly if he opted to make a return to management.

He said: "I think you are always looking to learn and I'm pleased I can say I've had a chance of playing in all four divisions."
