Former Tottenham trio Sean Davis, Noe Paramot and Pedro Mendes were joined in the Pompey starting line-up by record buy Benjani Mwaruwari.

Everton, just six points ahead of their hosts, were without the virus-hit Duncan Ferguson but had Joseph Yobo playing his last game before joining heading off for the African Nations Cup – like Portsmouth’s Lomana LuaLua.

Portsmouth: Ashdown, Griffin, Pamarot, O’Brien, Taylor, O’Neil, Pedro Mendes, Davis, Hughes, LuaLua, Mwaruwari. Subs: Westerveld, Diao, Priske, Karadas, Olisadebe.

Everton: Martyn, Hibbert, Yobo, Ferrari, Nuno Valente, Arteta, Cahill, Neville, Osman, Kilbane, Beattie. Subs: Wright, Weir, Bent, Davies, McFadden.

Referee: A Marriner (W Midlands)
