Kinsella in for Villa

New signing Mark Kinsella goes straight into the Villa squad to face Tottenham at White Hart Lane tomorrow determined to repay manager Graham Taylor following his move from Charlton.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder, who cost a fee believed to be £750,000 (€1.175m), is hoping to make his mark with his new club.

He said: “The manager and the chairman both have great ambitions.

“I know one or two players have left during the summer but that happens at every club, and I’m delighted to fill one of the gaps.

“I’m looking forward to the future with Villa. It’s a massive club and I want to help to bring success here,” Kinsella added on the club website, www.avfc.co.uk.

Taylor is hoping to instil a tougher approach in his side to improve their playing fortunes, particularly away from home.

Villa are boosted by the inclusion of Colombian international striker, Juan Pablo Angel, who is now fully fit following a close season leg injury.

Taylor, who is busy with his rebuilding programme at Villa Park, admitted: “To have won only four away games last season we did well to finish eighth.

“In future we have got to be tougher. I have got to find a squad which will win more than four away games in a season. That is my job.”

But he has been hampered this week by international calls going into the game against Tottenham.

Taylor said: “My concern at the present time is that Alpay is returning from Turkey.

“The two Swedes, Olof Mellberg and Marcus Allback, have been playing in Moscow, while Mark Delaney has been in Croatia.

“We have told the players to remain in London and we will organise all the arrangements but it is understandable why some clubs have some sort of gripe about this kind of situation.

“What it means is that we have lost the services of these four players for most of the week and we have this game against Tottenham.

“We therefore reorganise our travel arrangements so that we can have an hour’s get together to organise ourselves for a Premiership game on Saturday afternoon.

“I am making the point because this club is accused of not doing anything and not looking after players. We do look after our players.”

Despite his misgivings Taylor would not try to stop his internationals playing for their countries.

“From an international point I have no qualms and I would never ever deny a player making an international appearance,” he said.

“That is the highlight of their career and hopefully you get something back from them.

“I never make the suggestion that they should not make an international trip. I know that goes on having been an international manager.”

Taylor, however, is trying to play down the tension and and rumours of unrest at Villa.

He admitted: “When a new manager comes in some players accept that as a challenge but other players have their feathers ruffled.

“You have to go through that period of time. It doesn’t mean that a club is in turmoil.

“From my personal point of view it is a tremendous challenge to try move the club on to European football.”

Taylor expects the ride to be far from smooth.

“There are going to be some ups and downs,” he said.

“There are going to be some fall-outs and there are going to be great times and some great results, and there is going to be a spat with a supporter now and again.”

Taylor admitted swearing at a fan after the home defeat by Liverpool on Sunday but is trying to move on.

“I get on and do the job because whatever you say to that kind of person they not going to believe you anyhow,” he said.

“They have already made up their mind. So why worry about it.”

Taylor hopes a couple of good wins, particularly away from home, will eliminate most of the criticism levelled at Villa.
