The Dáil has been hearing intense criticism of Irish bankers today as it continues to debate the Government's plan to guarantee all deposits held by Irish-owned banks.

Green Party backbencher Paul Gogarty described bankers as "scum" as he told the House he was only supporting the legislation through gritted teeth.

He said the people who made vast sums of money off the backs off innocent people don't deserve to be bailed out, but it was the only way to protect Irish society.

Fine Gael's Michael Ring, meanwhile, said the bankers should all be in jail for what they have done to the country.
