Sven-Goran Eriksson last night hinted he is set to ignore the pleas of Everton boss David Moyes for Wayne Rooney to be rested when England travel to South Africa for a friendly later this month.
Moyes has insisted that the 17-year-old striker needs a break, although he is unable to offer him one just yet as he is short of forwards amid his side’s bid to qualify for Europe.
Rooney is almost certain to be called up for England’s Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia on June 11.
However, Eriksson also told one newspaper: “Why should he not go to South Africa?
“I haven’t picked the squad yet. It is too early. But if he is picked, he will play. Why not?”
Eriksson was yesterday expected to discuss his post-season plans for Rooney with Moyes as he gathered for a meeting with five leading Premiership managers.
Moyes was being joined by Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Robson, Peter Reid and Alan Curbishley at the first of three such get-togethers to bridge the growing divide between club and country.
Eriksson will hold a similar meeting with Arsene Wenger, Gerard Houllier, Steve McClaren and Gordon Strachan today, while Claudio Ranieri and Graham Taylor are unable to attend due to prior commitments and Glenn Roeder is still in hospital.
However, all three of those absent managers, along with other Premiership bosses not included on this guest list as they did not have players in the last England squad, will be invited to a further meeting later this season.
Acting chief executive David Davies said: “We didn’t talk about individual players. But a whole range of issues which needed to be discussed were covered.
“It was an excellent meeting. I have no doubt all the managers are supportive of the England team.”
