We want to keep Torres, says Atletico president

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has insisted his club have no intention of selling striker Fernando Torres.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has insisted his club have no intention of selling striker Fernando Torres.

The 22-year-old’s performances at the World Cup for Spain led to interest from Europe‘s top clubs, reportedly including Manchester United and Chelsea, but Cerezo wants to keep him at the Vincente Calderon.

“We have not received any offers for Fernando Torres,” Cerezo told Marca.

“If Fernando Torres eventually leaves Atletico it will be because he wants to, as we have no intention of selling him.

“If a club does make an offer for Fernando we will listen, as we do with any player, but that does not mean we will accept it.”

On Monday, Torres’ agent Antonio Sanz insisted his client intended to stay with his hometown club Atletico.

Despite that, Atletico coach Javier Aguirre claims the player has offered no guarantees about his future plans, but he encouraged him to stay.

“Fernando and Atletico have very strong links,” Aguirre said. “Atletico need him and he needs Atletico.”
