Higgins: Mandela memorial was 'a moving experience'

Ireland's President Michael D Higgins has described the memorial ceremoney for Nelson Mandela as a very moving experience.

Tens of thousands of South Africans have given Nelson Mandela a joyful send-off. They were joined by close to 100 world leaders along with celebrities at a memorial ceremony in Soweto.

Ireland was represented by President Michael D. Higgins.

"To see the stadium … filled with black South Africans of different ages was very moving," he said.

"When I look back at all that has been written since the death of Nelson Mandela, one would never think that so much could be achieved by both the struggle … but also the extraordinary witness given by one incredible man."
