Mitchell leaves Belfast for the Middle East

US Senator George Mitchell, who chaired the talks leading to the Good Friday Agreement, has stepped down as Chancellor of Queens University in Belfast after ten years.

US Senator George Mitchell, who chaired the talks leading to the Good Friday Agreement, has stepped down as Chancellor of Queens University in Belfast after ten years.

He was recently appointed US envoy to the Middle East and said reaching peace there will be far harder than in the North.

That role means he is precluded from continuing at Queens, but Senator Mitchell said he was leaving with "deep and genuine regret".
