The Minister for Foreign Affairs has defended Ireland’s participation in the new EU Rapid Reaction Force.

Brian Cowen, speaking at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, said the events of September 11 show that co-operation is necessary to enhance the prospects for peace.

It comes after members of the Green Party said Ireland’s participation flies in the face of our neutrality.

EU foreign and defence ministers will meet next week to discuss formation of the force.

Mr Cowen said the force would promote peace and stability and he believes Irish people should not shirk responsibility.
