Three young people have today been charged with the unlawful killing of Andrew Dolan.
The 20-year-old lost his fight for life at Beaumont Hospital on New Year's Day after being assaulted on Pearse Street in Mullingar in the early hours of December 23 last.
The NUI Galway student, originally from Carrick on Shannon, had been visiting Mullingar with friends on a night out.
Jessica Hughes (aged 19) of Greenfield Heights, Rathwire, Killucan, Co Westmeath, Patrick Farrell (aged 20) of Cornamuckla, Broadford, Co Kildare and Patrick Daly (aged 22) of Mulphedder, Clonard, Co Meath are charged with unlawfully killing Mr Dolan.
Detective Garda Peter Kelly said all three met by arrangement at Mullingar garda station this morning and made no reply when they were charged with unlawful killing, contrary to common law.
Judge Seamus Hughes granted bail on condition the three accused hand over their passports and sign on weekly at Mullingar garda station.
The DPP has directed that the cases be heard in the Circuit Court and the three accused will appear before Mullingar District Court again on March 22 to be served with the book of evidence.
The court heard the victim’s family had been notified of the court appearance but had chosen not to attend.
