Roy Keane 'still some way from fitness'

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has revealed key players Gary Neville and Roy Keane are some way from full fitness.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has revealed key players Gary Neville and Roy Keane are some way from full fitness.

There was a suggestion the pair, who have been out for some weeks with a groin injury and broken foot respectively, would play in tonight’s friendly to celebrate the opening of Burton Albion’s new stadium but Neville withdrew this morning while Keane was not considered.

“Gary be was due to play and pulled out because he is not feeling 100% but it is not a blow,” said Ferguson.

“We were going to play him for an hour so we have decided to leave him in training sessions at the moment because we get more out of him.

“But there is not a chance of making the Charlton match (on Saturday).”

Ferguson added on Sky Sports News: “Keane is back in light training but his injury is difficult to assess.

“They tend to take longer than you think. Metatarsal bones are pretty fragile and he is on the way back, I think probably two or three weeks.”
