John Gosden has won his appeal to the Jockey Club’s disciplinary panel against a decision by the Sandown stewards not to promote Silver Gilt to first place in the Addleshaw Goddard Stakes.
Gosden’s charge, ridden by Frankie Dettori, was beaten a short head by the David Elsworth-trained Romany Prince in the Listed contest over an extended two miles and the stewards held a 20-minute inquiry into possible interference.
Although the stewards found Romany Prince’s rider Dane O’Neill guilty of careless riding in the July 3 race, they felt the interference had not improved the winner’s placing and allowed the result to stand.
Today, the panel heard evidence from Gosden, Dettori and O’Neill as well as viewing video recordings of the race.
Having considered the evidence, the panel found that Romany Prince, carrying the Persian Punch colours of Jeff Smith, had interfered with Silver Gilt about two furlongs out causing the latter to switch and thereby losing momentum and balance.
Taking account of the fact that the winning distance was a short head, the panel were satisfied that Romany Prince had improved his placing in relation to Silver Gilt.
It therefore upheld the appeal and placed Silver Gilt first and Romany Prince second.
