Six Nations: We must take lead from England, claims Logan

Scotland winger Kenny Logan has urged his side to learn from the clinical finishing of Six Nations rivals England when they take to the field against Wales tomorrow.

Scotland winger Kenny Logan has urged his side to learn from the clinical finishing of Six Nations rivals England when they take to the field against Wales tomorrow.

Logan, who plays his club rugby at London Wasps, will win his 51st cap when the Scots run out at Murrayfield, and admitted the way Clive Woodward’s side dismantled the Welsh 44-15 in Cardiff on the opening weekend showed the importance of turning pressure into points.

Scotland’s campaign began in a more mundane manner as, despite a determined performance, they lost 16-6 to France in Paris.

Logan said: "We had three or four chances against France that maybe we should have taken and England would probably have taken them if they were in that situation.

"So we’ve got to learn from them but it’s just confidence we need, knowing that when we get through we don’t need to panic.

"That’s one thing that I would hope not to do myself.

"When I get through I’ll wait for support, I’ll go across the pitch to try to find someone rather than just keep going on.

"At this level, you can’t afford to panic, because if you panic, your opponents could pick the ball up and score at the other end."

Logan, who revealed that even his Wasps team-mate Lawrence Dallaglio was surprised by the margin of victory over the Welsh, believes the English performance can provide a benchmark for the Scots.

Logan continued: "He (Dallaglio) thought it was going to be their big test they all thought Wales was going to be the hardest game.

"It proved not to be, but Wales just made a couple of silly mistakes and England punished them.

"This week I don’t think there’ll be so many chances for us, but we have to be ruthless."

Logan hopes a victory tomorrow, and continuity of selection, can inspire the Scots even to challenge the English supremacy when they go head-to-head at Twickenham on March 3.

He said: "England have got a lot of good players and they’ve got confidence, they’ve got the belief that they can beat the top teams in the world.

"But when we won the Five Nations we also had tremendous confidence against France for instance.

"So we went into games just playing, because we knew we could win games. And when you win games you get confidence.

"For us to get confidence and get consistency in the team, we need to win this week.

"Because we want to have the same squad the following week, and try to keep the same squad for the whole Six Nations campaign.

"If we win against Wales, then we’ve got a massive game against England coming up and in the last two years we’ve really played well against them."

With Gregor Townsend out of the game through injury, Logan is vying for the first-choice goal-kicking duties with fly-half Duncan Hodge.

The veteran Scotland winger was disappointed to be replaced in the role by Hodge at half-time against the French, despite landing two of his penalty attempts.

But Logan said: "I’m beyond worrying about goal-kicking, I just get on and do it.

"If I do it, I do it and if I don’t, I support Hodge. If I kick, he supports me. I think that’s the important thing with goal-kickers."

Logan also knows whichever kicker gets the nod will be going head-to-head with Neil Jenkins, one of the greatest exponents of the art in the history of the game.

Jenkins produced an uncharacteristically poor showing against the English, but Logan said: "He missed four in the last game, so he’ll be out to put up a good performance.

"He and Jonny Wilkinson are the best kickers in the world, so we know that we can’t afford to give any penalties away - because he’ll kick them.

"But at the same time, if they give penalties away we’ll kick our goals."
