ASTI seeks more places on medical university courses

The Association of Secondary Teachers has called on the Government to make more places available on university courses in subjects such as medicine and dentistry.

The Association of Secondary Teachers has called on the Government to make more places available on university courses in subjects such as medicine and dentistry.

The call follows revelations that just 4% of the 12,000 applicants for these courses were successful last year.

Part of the problem is the fact that 40% of places of the courses are being taken by repeat students and students from Britain and the North.

Responding to the news today, ASTI general secretary John White said inadequate funding was causing the situation.

"A greater number of places need to be made available," he said. "The Government simply must create further places."
