Interpol has sent an alert to its 184 member nations to try to track down seven suspected terrorists who escaped from a prison in the Saudi capital, the international police organisation sai today.

Interpol described the men as “suspected al-Qaida-linked terrorists".

The Lyon, France-based organisation said in a statement that it sent out notices including the men’s photos and fingerprints.

It also asked members to notify an Interpol bureau in Saudi Arabia with information.

The men, six Saudis and a Yemeni, escaped from Malaz, one of the main prisons in Riyadh, on July 8, Interpol said.

The escape, announced this weekend, was a rare jailbreak in the tightly controlled kingdom and US ally in the war on terror.

The Saudi Interior Ministry described the fugitives as religious extremists and said they had been arrested in separate incidents during the past year.
