Labour slams govt 'failure' in schools

The Labour Party has claimed that conditions in some Irish schools are so bad that teachers and staff are resorting to calling in the Health and Safety Authority.

The Labour Party has claimed that conditions in some Irish schools are so bad that teachers and staff are resorting to calling in the Health and Safety Authority.

Party spokeswoman Jan O'Sullivan said the HSA had visited 424 schools since 1997 and had made 31 visits so far this year.

Ms O'Sullivan said problems were widespread, but the Government was failing to provide the funding needed to rectify the situation.

"We were told about problems with electricity, concerns with leaking roofs, a wide variety of problems in schools," she said.

"The capitation grant is not nearly enough to cover the cost for many schools, particularly schools with old buildings."
