Kevin-Prince Boateng and Anthony Vanden Borre picked up knocks against Manchester United, giving Grant the opportunity to bring in Papa Bouba Diop and Steve Finnan.

Aruna Dindane was recalled, with Danny Webber on the bench.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was forced to bring in Steed Malbranque after Jordan Henderson suffered an injured ankle in the draw against Wigan at the weekend.
