Green Party leader Trevor Sargent TD today expressed surprise at the revelation that more than 400 appointments will be made by ministers before the upcoming general election.
"On February 28, the Taoiseach told me that he did not approve of 'packing' state boards near the end of a Government's term in office," said Mr Sargent. "He seemed to indicate that it would not happen this year."
"Despite this assurance, it seems now that he was misleading the Dáil. His ministers are set to nominate and make 400 appointments to state bodies in the coming six weeks.
"When the Dáil resumes tomorrow, the Taoiseach must clarify his position on making last-minute pre-election appointments and he must publicly order his ministers to avoid engaging in this activity."
