Meseret Defar broke the world 3,000 metres road running record in today's Newcastle/Gateshead meeting with a time of eight minutes 46.9 seconds.
Ethiopia's Olympic 5,000m champion bettered the mark of 8min 53sec achieved by Germany's Luminita Zaituc on home soil in Freiburg five years ago.
Defar, decimating the previous mark and leading from start to finish, won by over 100 metres ahead of her nearest rival Eloise Wellings.
Australia's Craig Mottram followed suit as he won the men's equivalent in a new world road-running best time.
He came out on top in a thrilling 3,000 metres duel with Eliud Kipchoge, clocking a time of seven minutes 41.7 seconds to beat his Kenyan rival and defending champion by just over a second.
Both men shattered the previous world best of seven minutes 49 seconds which Brahim Boutayeb from Morocco achieved in Helsinki 16 years ago.
