The governor of the Central Bank, John Hurley, today announced the appointment of Tony Grimes as director general designate of the Central Bank and Financial Services Authority of Ireland.
He will take up his position as Director General when Liam Barron retires from the position, having reached retirement age, on August 17, 2007.
"On behalf of the board, I am very pleased to announce this appointment", said Governor Hurley. "It follows an open competition that attracted a field of strong candidates from Ireland and abroad.
"Tony Grimes was the unanimous choice of the panel. He has a wealth of experience across many relevant areas, both domestically and within the Eurosystem".
The selection panel was comprised of a sub committee of the board and Professor Josef Christl, Executive Director and member of the governing board of the Austrian Central Bank.
Tony Grimes is currently assistant director general of the Central Bank with responsibility for market operations.
He has previously held a number of senior management positions in the Central Bank in the economics, international relations, markets and payments areas.
He is a member of the payments and securities settlements committee of the European Central Bank. He worked with the ESRI prior to joining the Central Bank.
