Psychiatric nurses are to be balloted on industrial action following the collapse of talks aimed at settling a row over compensation for attacks against them.
Unions claim employers have consistently failed to deliver on promises to implement a proper protection system.
“Too often we’ve had cases where nurses, who are doing a very difficult job, have been subjected to assaults and there isn’t proper provision there in those circumstances,” said Labour health spokesperson Liz McManus.
“I know of individual cases where this has happened and I’ve raised them in the Dáil, but so far we haven’t seen the kind of change that I think is needed.”
